1. Huskies in Angmagssalik (Tasiilaq)
It is very cold and very wet in Greenland, and we are talking summer time. This is also the time when huskies,
wild dogs in extremely hierarchical social groups, get a rest from their winter duty and practice their howls...
Howling huskies are probably the lasting impression of a trip to the largest island on earth - whatever you
do, wherever you go, whatever the time of the day: You can hear them. Tasiilaq, as the local Inuit call
this largest settlement on the east coast, is reached via a spectacular helicopter ride from Kulusuk, a place
not worth mentioning but lucky to have a muddy gravel airstrip thanks to the Cold War and American desire to
control air traffic in the northern Atlantic and polar regions.
