1. Mzungu In The Mist
For a white man, or mzungu in many Bantu languages, making it to the civil war area in the high jungle mountains of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo (Zaïre) can only be a desperate attempt to be one of the lucky few to still encounter some of only 600 remaining mountian gorillas worldwide. Fortunately we didn't know that it also meant being lucky to survive, as we learned later, as our Uganda base camp village Kisoro was attacked by Congo rebels in search of food and large numbers of rogue Congo militias were fought from Uganda into Rwanda during the day of our ascent. Ignorance is bliss, so I am happily resting past the Bunagana border crossing in Congo (Zaïre) close to the Goma refugee camp, where over 50,000 Tutsi were slaughtered by Hutu in less than two weeks as part of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

2. Kenya Roads
The road to Masai Mara is unanimously voted by tourists to be the worst anywhere. It's an 8-hour pothole obstacle run.
3. Marabu Storch
These ugly yet majestic birds can be found all over East Africa. They are hardly ever disturbed by anything.
4. Zanzibar Bar
Of course, on the beach - where else on an island as beautiful as few others?
5. Lake Nakuru
Over one Million flamongos provide this park in Kenya with its pink color. Many other Big Five animals enjoy life at its shores.
6. Ngorongoro Safari
The bottom of this crater is home to an amazing variety of animals and is best explored cruising around in 4x4s.
7. Serengeti Break
Between game drives it is necessary to rest on open spaces and in a larger group to deter potentially interested animals, such as lions.
8. Likoni Ferry
Life in Kenya on the outskirts of Mombasa is tough. This town is bustling with activity because it is situated on the busy road to Diani Beach.
9. Gorilla Guards
One guide, two machete guys, two rangers and nine soldiers for the protection of only eight tourists in the Congo (Zaïre) jungle mountains.
10. Congo Life
These people live under unimaginable circumstances yet display incredible happiness at the sight of a few daring tourists.
