1. In Memoriam: Madrid 3/12
On March 12, 2004, a series of explosions killed close to 200 people and wounded more than 1,400 in the Spanish capital, my favorite European city and formal permanent residence. A few days later I flew into town to visit friends and to grieve in a city that displayed its courageous stance in defiant demonstrations by millions of people. A strange week followed where politics tried to play with the anger of people, who responded with an overwhelming change of opinion in the general elections. Puerta de Atocha, main southern train terminus and home of the AVE high-speed trains, became an ocean of burning candles and heart-breaking site of families holding pictures of their deceased.

2. Snow Heaven
Livigno, small tax and customs-free Italian enclave in the Swiss Engadin Alps, offers fantastic views from the tops of the surrounding mountains.
3. Holmenkollen
Nordic countries are crazy about winter sports. This stadium is the holy grail for ski jumpers, just outside Oslo in Norway.
4. Café Comercial
Glorieta de Bilbao is the main plaza in my neighborhood in Madrid, with street cafés and restaurants along Calle Manuela Malasaña.
5. Bagni Vecchi
A great evening after a long day of snowboarding in Livigno is best spent in the old thermal baths of Bormeo, Italy.
6. Sibelius
The monument for Finland's greatest composer has become a must-see for every visitor to Helsinki.
7. Too Much Snow
We got more than we asked for in Livigno, Italy, and were rewarded with digging our car out of last night's donations by nature.
8. Suomenlinna
It was bitter cold when I took the icebreaker ferry to this historic Finnish fortress offshore from Helsinki.
9. Perfect Runs
This mountain is creatively named snow mountain for obvious reasons. Livigno in Italy has countless runs for every taste.
10. Spanish Stars
Don Quixote de la Mancha on his skinny horse Rosinante and his old servant Sancho Pansa are the beloved heroes of Cervantes' literary masterpiece.
