1. Unnamed Sand Bank I get frequently asked about my favorite island on earth... well, this is it. The lagoon of the Aitutaki atoll, about 200 kilometers north of the Cook Islands' main spot Rarotonga, is considered to be one of the largest and most beautiful reef-encircled protected waters in the southern Pacific Ocean. Several motus, small islands grown out of larger reefs along the atoll's edge, adorn the southeastern corner of the lagoon. The most famous of them, One Foot Island, even sports its own postal stamp and immigration office, even though it is uninhabited.
