1. Japanese Shark
Wow... The JSR 700 series, mostly in service on the Nozomi top tier of the three Shinkansen bullet train service levels, sure is a sight to make people stop and look. In my ever-lasting quest to do everything in life at least once, I bit the bullet (pun intended) of astronomical prices for the pleasure of a ride: Almost US$300 for a second-class, two-hour ride from Tokyo to Kyoto and back. The inside of the trains is rather normal and can't hold its own against current-generation ICEs in Germany but the top speed is nothing short of awesome, baby. No shaking inside, no noise - you could play Mikado (again: pun), no kidding.

This is it. Germany' latest-generation engineering marvel, an InterCity Experimental III, at the main station in Munich.
3. Swiss Tunnels
High-altitude passes across the Alps are closed in winter, such as the Flüela-Pass on the way to ski heaven Livigno. Car on train, train through tunnel!
4. Cinque Terre
Trains following the beautiful coastline of Cinque Terre in northern Italy must stop in Vernazza at a platform mostly inside a tunnel.
5. Dresden Park Train
You can actually ride on this toy train in one of this German city's pretty old parks. Sitting in open lorries, the wind blows around your head!
6. Marche
This region of Italy choose to use an entire high-speed train to promote its region for tourism. Very effective, even pretty.
7. Bombing Aftermath
These AVE high-speed trains sit idle at Madrid's Atocha station after the terrorist attacks there on March 11, 2004. Note that there are no people.
8. Colonial Charme
Wonderfully old trains still run from Victoria Falls across the Zambezi river. The British really did travel in style...
9. Old Bullet
An earlier-version bullet train at Tokyo Central. Not as swoosh as the JSR700 but an imposing sight that screams speed at you.
10. Arriving in Venice
The D240, famous overnight InterRail favorite from Budapest, crosses the long bridge to the islands that make up Venice.
