1. Aitutaki, Cook Islands, South Pacific Ocean
I didn't even have to think about this selection for one second... One of my so-called side trips, I ventured from Australia to New Zealand, killed a week traveling around the south island just to wait for my flight to the Cooks, spent some more days on Rarotonga (what a drag!) before I finally made it onto a small airplane to Aitutaki. I wasn't going to be disappointed after all the hype - watching the gigantic lagoon of the atoll coming into sight made up for all the effort and time it took to get there. True paradise on earth, every motu of the archipelago is a piece of heaven in itself. They are only topped by the serene sand banks where no plane, no boat and no human being goes - except me, of course.

9. Tavewa
The Yasawa Flyer supply cat turns back to Fiji's main port short of this island, which makes it incredibly remote and quiet.
10. La Digue
This small spot off Praslin island in the Seychelles lines up one secluded bay after another along its southeastern shores.
