1. The Rio de Janeiro Sugar Loaf
What a ride... In two stages, passengers are whisked via an intermediate mountain to the top of Rio de Janeiro's landmark, all without any supporting masts in between. Those with a fear of heights better don't apply, as the views during the ride are as spectacular as they are on the top. Best of all, the last gondolas leave the top station rather late at night, so it is possible to watch once-in-a-lifetime sunsets behind the city skyline and its numerous famous beaches.

Madrid's largest park offers a very rare opportunity - just enjoy the ride, there's no altitude differential on the way to the city.
4. Table Mountain
Cape Town has these new gondolas where my great skill to always catch the best spot doesn't help - they rotate during the ride.
5. Hakone Ropeway
Going past the volcano Mt. Fuji, this Japanese ride also crosses areas with strong geothermal activity and sulfur mud pools.
6. Corcovado
For the best view over all of Rio de Janeiro take this cog train all the way up to the Christ Redeemer statue.
7. Livigno
Just another ski lift, express with all the bells and whistles, but I had to list it because I took this particular one many times.
8. Prague Castle
Unfortunately, this beauty didn't pose for me but for her boy-friend, right at the moment I had waited for with the cog train in the picture.
9. Bariloche
Swiss Argentina didn't present its best weather to me when I visited the mountains around San Carlos de Bariloche.
10. Ushuaia
This rusty chairlift took me through rain up to a cozy mountain lodge above the southernmost place of South America.
