1. Blue Lagoon
No, not the one in the South Pacific... The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa southwest of Reykjavík,
Iceland, receives its water from a nearby power plant that utilizes superheated sea water from deep bore
holes in the lava to convert thermal energy into electric power. Exiting the turbines, big condensers
convert the steam back into water, which is diverted back into a huge artificial lagoon at a temperature of about
38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). The mineral salts and fine silica mud make this a beauty
spa with high-priced merchandise, as they condition and exfoliate skin. Cyanobacteria give it its milky-blue
color straight out of a sci-fi scene.
