1. Congo Silverback
Few experiences in the world can be more memorable and magical than an encounter with gorilla gorilla
beringei, the rare mountain gorillas of the impenetrable highland jungles. Only around 600 of them are left
in the world today, all living in a small civil war-ravaged area straddling the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and
Congo (Zaïre). In the footsteps of Diane Fossey and Gorillas in the Mist, it took a 2-week adventure
over 3,500 kilomters of the worst roads I have ever seen to get there. Moving experiences of poverty and war devastation
were everywhere but also some of the most emotionally draining moments during a virtually triumphant ride through
Congolese villages with the happiest and most thankful people I have ever seen, just before embarking on the final
climb through the jungle.

2. Singing Koala
I won the lottery when I witnessed this one in a rare display of singing in a wildlife park on Tasmania.
|
|
3. Sleeping Sharks
I wish I could claim this to be a diving encounter but these ray sharks were sleeping on top of a glass tube at
the Sydney Aquarium.

|
4. No more food!
Too many children had visited the kangaroos at a Perth wildlife park on a school holiday. Predictably, they didn't
want to be fed anymore.

|
5. The King
As a final farewell when leaving the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, this majestic little cat crossed our path.
|
|
6. Thinking Friends
Chimps have an amazing variety of facial features and expressions. What are these two fellows thinking about when
looking at me on an island off Entebbe, Uganda?
|
|
7. Mexican Turtles
Again, not taken during a dive, but at least this photo recognizes turtle conservation efforts worldwide,
such as here on an island off Cancun.

|
8. Little Snapper
Can you hear Steve Irwin? Crrrikey!!! This monstrous saltie near Darwin measured about 18 feet
(6 meters), about as big as they come.

|
9. Single and Looking
How about some Nandu for dinner? Quite recommendable when you visit Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the
Americas.

|
10. Rottnest Quokkas
These cuties, who live on an island of Freemantle in Western Australia, supposedly have elephants as their
closest relatives. Yeah right!
